In the wake of the tragic shooting at Florida State University, where two people lost their lives, gun violence survivor Whitney Austin offers her perspective on the mental health challenges faced by survivors. Having endured 12 gunshot wounds in 2018, Austin emphasizes the need for emotional support for those affected, stating, “Regardless of which camp you’re in, you’ll need mental health support.”

As the founder of the Whitney Strong foundation, she advocates for the CARR (Crisis Aversion & Rights Retention) bill in Kentucky, which aims to allow temporary removal of firearms from individuals in distress while ensuring their rights are respected. Despite facing legislative hurdles, Austin remains determined to push for responsible gun laws, expressing her frustration with the public’s numbness towards repeated gun violence. “I don’t want you to go through this,” she says, urging the need for advocacy and change.
