A 38-year-old man from Madison, Wisconsin, named Vernon Frills, has been charged after he allegedly shot a police K9 during a traffic stop in Rockford, Illinois, on Saturday. The incident occurred around 3:20 p.m. when a K9 officer stopped a vehicle, and Frills, a passenger, fled the scene on foot while firing shots that struck the K9 twice.

The K9, who is now receiving emergency veterinary care and is expected to require surgery, sustained injuries to its shoulder and paw. Frills faces serious charges including attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm toward a peace officer, among others. This situation highlights the risks police animals face during law enforcement activities and raises questions about the circumstances leading up to the traffic stop.
