Youth turkey hunters in Missouri achieved remarkable success during the recent youth hunting weekend, harvesting a total of 4,428 birds, according to preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). This impressive figure marks the second-highest harvest since the youth season began in 2001, falling just short of the 2015 record of 4,449 birds.
Top counties for the harvest included Osage, Gasconade, and Texas, with 107, 105, and 94 birds collected respectively. Contributing factors for the surge in numbers included excellent weather and a plentiful population of two-year-old gobblers. As the regular spring turkey season approaches, taking place from April 21 to May 11, this successful weekend points to a potentially strong season ahead for hunters.
