In her first 100 days as Cook County State’s Attorney, Eileen O’Neill Burke has introduced aggressive gun policies and aims to reshape the office’s approach to prosecution. Declaring gun violence in Chicago to be at “war zone numbers,” Burke has reversed prior policies that prioritized reform, opting instead for a tough-on-crime strategy that includes automatically seeking pretrial detention for specific offenses and increasing felony charges for retail theft.

Burke also faces criticism from advocates who worry her policies may revive past injustices in the criminal justice system. During her interview, she acknowledged the pushback but maintained that her focus on addressing community disruption caused by gun crimes is paramount. As her office prepares for changes in electronic monitoring programs under new management, concerns about adequate staffing and enforcement resonate, making her early decisions pivotal for Cook County’s legal landscape.
