Half of U.S. states, including Alabama and New Mexico, have enacted new laws making it illegal to possess devices that convert pistols into automatic weapons, also known as “Glock switches.” These laws come in response to alarming increases in gun violence linked to such devices, particularly following a tragic shooting in Alabama that left four dead and several injured.

The push for stricter regulations reflects a growing trend among states to align with federal guidelines that prohibit machine guns and associated conversion parts. Law enforcement has reported a significant rise in the seizure of these devices, from 814 between 2012 and 2016 to over 12,000 in a recent 34-month period. As states continue to combat the illegal use of these conversion tools, additional legislation is under consideration across the country.
