From 2011-style handguns to bullpup rifles, Springfield Armory is not a company to shy away from a new product category. Its next foray is into the world of “PDW” (personal defense weapon) large-format handguns with the new-for-2025 Kuna.
The Kuna is a semi-automatic handgun chambered for 9 mm Luger. It utilizes a roller-delayed blowback action that uses a single, vertical roller. The pistol has an upper receiver and handguard machined from aluminum and given an anodized finish. The lower is reinforced polymer with a removable AR-pattern grip. The Kuna’s magazines are made of translucent polymer with metal feed lips and have a capacity of 30 rounds. While proprietary, they will have an MSRP of $25. With a 6” barrel, the pistol has an overall length of 15.5” and weighs 4 lbs., 10 ozs.
Controls on the Kuna are ambidextrous, with a bilateral safety, magazine release and bolt release. The charging handle can be moved to either side of the firearm. Designed for attaching accessories, an M1913 Picatinny rail runs the length of the upper receiver for attaching optics. Additionally, the rail has built-in iron sights that display a front post and rear notch when folded down, or a post and aperture when flipped up. The receiver endplate has a section of Picatinny rail and the handguard has M-Lok slots for attaching accessories. Threaded 1/2×28 TPI for attaching suppressors or other muzzle devices, the barrel ships with a multi-port muzzle brake installed.
The Springfield Armory Kuna will be offered in two configurations—the standard pistol and the pistol with a folding Strike Industries FSA stabilizing brace attached. It has an MSRP of $999 or $1,149 with the brace. For more information, see the company’s website.
