Richmond Sees 30% Spike in Aggravated Assaults in 2025

Richmond Sees 30% Spike in Aggravated Assaults in 2025

Richmond’s crime statistics for the first quarter of 2025 reveal a concerning 30% increase in aggravated assaults, with 137 incidents reported compared to 105 in 2024. Police Chief Rick Edwards emphasized the urgency of addressing escalating gun violence following a recent shooting at a funeral, where he highlighted that community safety should not be compromised even during sacred events.

In addition to the rise in assaults, 14 murders have occurred this year—a 27% increase from 2024. Edwards stresses the correlation between physical altercations and gun violence, noting a general 9% rise in overall violent crime. City officials are implementing new initiatives, including an office for gun violence prevention, aiming to tackle this troubling trend and foster community safety.
