An armed man walking his dog in Spokane, Wash., was able to stop a knife-wielding man on a stabbing spree in a local apartment complex, according to Spokane police.

Officers say the incident began when the suspect attacked a woman in the apartment complex just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13. Another tenant came to the woman’s aid, pulling her into one of the units to save her from the attacker. The knife-armed assailant then attacked a man near a stairwell, killing him, then began walking through the complex before spotting a man walking a dog.

The attacker ran at the dog-walker, who drew a gun and fired, stopping the attack and killing the assailant in the process. The armed man attempted to render aid to the suspect after shooting him but was unsuccessful. The woman who was the initial target of the stabbing suspect was uninjured. Police say no arrests have been made and that the shooting appeared to be self-defense. (The Spokesman-Review; Spokane, Wash; 5/14/25)

From the Armed Citizen® Archives – June 1968

Mrs. Verda Byrd, 44, of Claremont, Okla., got out of her car in Tulsa to make an early-morning phone call and found herself trapped in the phone booth by a youth who thrust what she thought was a pistol into her back. The youth forced her back into her car and clutched her.

Snatching a .22-cal. pistol from the seat, she shot him and ran back to the phone booth to summon police. The wounded youth started the car and rammed the booth, but fell dead. Mrs. Byrd escaped uninjured. (Tulsa, Okla.)
