Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerena Whethers advocates for a new parental responsibility law aimed at mitigating youth gun violence in Louisville. In light of disturbing spikes in incidents involving juveniles and firearms, Whethers emphasizes the urgent need for legislative action to hold parents accountable for their children’s actions, suggesting that fines and penalties may be necessary.

Highlighting the impact this violence has on community safety, Whethers urges potential offenders to “put the guns down” and insists that current measures lack effectiveness. She explains that the proposed legislation would empower prosecutors to pursue civil and criminal charges against parents of young offenders, which she believes could deter future incidents and foster greater accountability.
