As the holiday season approaches, Green Lake County’s ‘Donate A Deer’ initiative is making a significant impact by providing much-needed venison to local food pantries. In a remarkable show of community support, hunters have contributed a record donation of ten deer at once, which represents approximately 350 pounds of venison. The program, which has been running for four years, addresses the need for meat at a time when food pantry demand increases sharply during the winter months.
Among the contributors is ten-year-old Oliver Breister, who personally harvested three deer, demonstrating the program’s focus on community involvement and education about giving back. Each deer is processed at Leroy Meats before being distributed to families in need, with the pantry currently serving between 80 to 100 families weekly. With another drop-off scheduled for November 29, local hunters are encouraged to participate and help ensure that the pantry stays well-stocked throughout the winter months.
