Springfield Armory entered the world of modular, striker-fired handguns in 2023 with its Echelon line of pistols. Since then, the company has offered the Echelon in a variety of sizes, colors and configurations. New for 2026, Springfield is introducing an entry-level Echelon model with the Alpha.

With the Alpha, Springfield Armory introduces an entry-level version of its popular Echelon platform.

Most of the Echelon Alpha’s features are shared with the rest of the Echelon lineup. These include a precision forged and billet-machined slide and cold hammer-forged barrel, both of which are given a black Melonite finish.

The Alpha’s changes over the original Echelon include a re-contoured slide profile.

The Alpha uses Springfield’s innovative Variable Interface System, which allows the direct-mounting of most popular electronic sight footprints.

The Alpha uses Springfield’s Variable Interface System, which allows many popular optics to be mounted without the use of adapter plates.

All controls are bilateral for full ambidexterity. It uses the same serialized stainless-steel chassis, which Springfield calls the Central Operating Group, meaning it is compatible with both factory and aftermarket Echelon grip modules and slides. The Alpha’s grip module is standard Echelon, with an oversized trigger guard, textured indexing points and Springfield’s Adaptive Grip Texture. It has interchangeable backstraps. A medium-size backstrap comes installed on each pistol, with small and large sizes available for purchase separately.

Like all Echelon models, the Alpha’s grip module has interchangeable backstraps to customize the grip size.

One of the Alpha’s changes is the slide contour, which is simpler than the previous Echelons, but has deep and aggressive serrations for positive manipulation. The optics mount cover is made of polymer. While the Alpha is compatible with standard Echelon magazines, it comes supplied with a single 15-round version (restricted capacity 10-round magazines are also available) whose stainless-steel body has a natural finish. Sights are made of metal and consist of a non-illuminated white front dot and outlined tactical U-notch rear.

The Alpha comes with a non-illuminated front sight and tactical U-notch rear sight.

Initially, the Alpa will be offered in the 4.0C (“Compact”) configuration. This has a 4-inch barrel, overall length of 7.25 inches and height of 5.13 inches. Coming in at nearly $100 less than other Echelon models, the Alpha has an MSRP of $599 or $649 for the California-compliant model. For more information, see the company’s website.

The Echelon Alpha seeks to open up the benefits of the Echelon design to a wider audience.
