Shopping for a pistol red dot can be overwhelming these days. There are dozens of options, feature lists a mile long and prices ranging from “too good to be true” to “do I really need to sell a kidney?” Here’s my advice: focus on the fundamentals.

First, make sure the optic actually fits your handgun. Check the footprint and confirm you have the correct mounting plate before you spend a dime. It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how often this gets overlooked.

Next, I value reliability over gimmicks. I’d rather have a simple optic that works every single time than one packed with features that quits when I need it most. Decide whether you want an open or enclosed emitter, look for a battery life measured in years — not months — and consider a 3- to 6-MOA dot. I tend to favor the smaller dots because they allow for more precise shooting.

One optic I’ve had great luck with is the Holosun 507C-X3 red dot sight. It offers a multi-reticle system, Solar Failsafe technology, Shake Awake motion activation, a rugged aluminum housing, a convenient side-loading battery tray and an impressive 50,000-hour battery life. At an MSRP of $364, it isn’t the cheapest option on the shelf — and that’s exactly the point.

Most of us have owned a bargain-priced red dot that eventually failed. My advice is simple: buy quality the first time. A dependable optic is an investment in your confidence every time you pick up your pistol.

As I’ve said more times than I can count: buy once, cry once.
