The Idaho Department of Fish and Game announces encouraging findings for deer populations in the Magic Valley region, revealing strong mule deer numbers this winter. Recent surveys identified over a thousand mule deer wintering near Jerome, with both fawn and doe populations also appearing robust, despite previous concerns stemming from summer wildfires.

However, some areas west of the Bogwood River are experiencing unexpected population declines, prompting further investigation by wildlife managers. Regional Wildlife Manager Mike McDonald indicates that the findings will inform adjustments to hunting season proposals, as more data on deer survival comes in later this summer. The upcoming Fish and Game Commission meeting aims to review survey data and public input to enhance wildlife management plans.
