The family of Elijah Wilks, a 26-year-old black man fatally shot by an off-duty police officer, admits that the shooting was “justified.” This statement follows the release of video footage depicting Wilks confronting the officer with a gun just moments before he was shot, prompting the family to expedite the public unveiling of the video to combat misinformation about the incident.

Wilks was involved in a minor car accident when he approached the plainclothes officer, allegedly hitting him in the face with his firearm. According to the family’s attorney, they recognize the severity of Wilks’ decisions that day, with one family member expressing their intention not to pursue lawsuits, stating they have come to terms with the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The investigation is currently led by the West Allis Police Department.
