Mississippi Declared a ‘National Failure’ in Gun Safety

A recent report by Everytown Research & Policy identifies Mississippi as having the second-weakest gun laws in the United States, labeling the state a “national failure” in gun safety. With a gun death rate of 29.4 per 100,000 people, Mississippi’s figures are significantly higher than the national average of 13.7, signaling serious concerns about public safety.

The study emphasizes that Mississippi has virtually no foundational gun laws in place and ranks last among 50 states for its weak regulations. Private sellers are not mandated to conduct background checks, and assault weapons, including AR-15s and AK-47s, remain legal for purchase. These factors contribute to the state’s alarming rate of gun violence, inviting further scrutiny into Mississippi’s approach to gun legislation and public safety measures.
