The Army has commenced construction of a new ammunition production facility at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Missouri, designed to manufacture millions of 6.8 mm rounds each year for its cutting-edge Next Generation Squad Weapons. This facility, expected to be operational by 2028, highlights the Army’s commitment to enhancing its supply chain for the latest firepower, specifically the XM5 and XM250, which replace legacy 5.56 mm weapons.

This 450,000 square-foot site will not only produce cartridge cases and projectiles but is also projected to generate 385 million rounds annually. Major General John T. Reim emphasized the significant role of such production capabilities in securing battlefield success, as the Army integrates advanced weaponry with capabilities that promise better accuracy and lighter weight compared to previous calibers.
