Ohio experiences a notable decline in concealed-carry permits in 2024, with 73,552 permits issued compared to over 90,000 in 2023. This change follows the implementation of a new law permitting gun owners to carry without a permit, often referred to as “constitutional carry.” Attorney General Dave Yost attributes this decrease largely to the new law but emphasizes that a significant number of Ohioans still opt for the permitting system, with over 14,000 new licenses issued and nearly 60,000 renewals this past year.

Yost highlights the advantages of holding a concealed-carry permit, particularly the ability to carry in states that may not recognize permitless carry, thus ensuring reciprocity agreements are honored. He also points out the value of mandatory training, which provides crucial knowledge about firearm safety and local self-defense laws. As permit holders must renew every five years, the focus on education and informed ownership remains an essential aspect of responsible gun ownership in Ohio.
