Governor Larry Rhoden recently signed several pro-Second Amendment bills in Mitchell, South Dakota, as part of his Open for Opportunity Tour. Notable among these is Senate Bill 100, which permits college students with enhanced permits to carry concealed firearms on campus. In addition, House Bill 1218 allows local government employees to conceal carry on publicly owned property, reflecting a significant shift in South Dakota’s stance on gun rights.

Rhoden emphasized that the implementation of these laws, effective July 1st, aims to uphold constitutional rights while addressing community concerns. During the signing event at Boyd’s Hardwood Gunstocks, he noted the debate surrounding these changes mirrors past discussions regarding the constitutional carry law enacted in 2019, which ultimately did not lead to the feared negative consequences. Furthermore, he has reached out to federal authorities to advocate for eliminating the seven-day waiting period for firearm shipments, indicating a broader push for loosening regulations that gun advocates argue are overly restrictive.
