The City of Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA), in collaboration with the Harvest Collective, has been awarded nearly $300,000 from the Department of Criminal Justice to launch the “It Takes a Village” program aimed at combatting gun violence. This initiative, which will take place at the Villages at Lincoln community and extend to surrounding areas, is designed to engage youth before they become involved in violent activities.
Director of Community Support Services, Greg Goodman, emphasizes a proactive approach, stating, “Let’s not sit back and wait for something to happen.” The program will partner with local organizations to provide educational opportunities and build community ties, while also funding the creation of a garden that will employ teenagers, instilling a sense of purpose and work experience. The official kick-off, alongside the National Night Out event on August 5th, is anticipated to energize community efforts against gun violence.
