A Michiana coalition, Connect 2 Be the Change, is set to host a “Guns to Gardens” event at the First Presbyterian Church in South Bend this Saturday. The initiative encourages community members to surrender unwanted firearms, which will be melted down to create gardening tools and sculptures, while participants receive gift cards valued at $150 for handguns and $200 for assault rifles, available while supplies last.

Organizers emphasize the urgency of addressing gun violence, particularly its impact on children growing up in gun-saturated environments. Ruth Andrews, a key event coordinator, highlights the need for community awareness and action as South Bend faces a concerning surplus of guns. Those interested in participating must ensure their surrendered firearms have a serial number. For more details, visit the event’s Facebook page.
