In the ultra-competitive and crowded market for polymer-frame, striker-fired 9 mm handguns, manufacturers seek to balance out their flagship model with an entry-level choice at an affordable price. Due to that competition, however, “entry-level” can’t mean lacking in features. Springfield Armory accomplishes this with its XD series of guns. Now nearly a quarter-century old, Springfield continues to evolve the XD platform to offer a reliable and feature-rich product at an affordable price. New for 2026, the company is introducing the XD Mod.4 OSP.
The new fourth-generation XD uses Springfield’s proven Ultra Safety Assurance (USA) trigger with a flat face, combined with the passive grip safety for which the platform is known. Additional safety features include a cocked striker indicator at the rear of the slide and the extractor raises when a cartridge is in the chamber for a visual and tactile loaded-chamber indicator. The Mod.4 uses a standard XD-type magazine that holds 16 rounds, with 10-round versions available. One is supplied with each pistol, and spare magazines have an MSRP of $31.

The dimensions of the XD Mod.4 OSP place it in the “do-all” compact-size category. With a 4-inch hammer-forged barrel, the pistol has an overall length of 7.3 inches, a height of 5.5 inches and weighs 27 ounces. Steel parts are given Springfield’s Melonite finish.

The Mod.4’s polymer frame is “one-size-fits-all” with an extended beavertail, undercut triggerguard and the enhanced checkering introduced on the Mod.3 variant. The Mod.4’s most noticeable update is improved slide serrations, which are deeper and more aggressive. The hammer-forged slide is optics-ready through Springfield’s OSP system. This uses adapter plates (MSRP $25) to allow for the mounting of popular red-dot optics. Sights are made of steel and consist of a front post with a fiber-optic insert and rear notch with a serrated face and two white dots.

The Springfield XD Mod.4 OSP has an MSRP of $399. For more information, see the company’s website.
