The US Army is addressing a decline in tank gunnery proficiency, with many gunners struggling with fundamental skills due to two decades focused on counterinsurgency warfare. As the military shifts its focus back to large-scale combat operations against potential opponents like Russia and China, experts warn of a significant gap between the advanced capabilities of tanks and the effectiveness of the crews operating them.

According to Robert Cameron, historian for the Army’s armor branch, a 2019 study revealed that tank crews face challenges with basic tasks such as boresighting and target detection, emphasizing the need for renewed training. The Army’s upcoming Armor Standardization and Training Strategy 2030 aims to enhance these critical skills, with a new gunnery manual set to be released soon, highlighting the importance of precision shooting at ranges of 1,800 to 2,400 meters for successful engagements.
