During the Korean War, Commander Daniel Jordan Carrison of the USS O’Bannon engages in an unconventional activity: hunting ducks from the deck of his destroyer. As he patrols Wonsan Harbor in January 1952, Carrison employs a Springfield rifle to bag eleven ducks, claiming they pose a distraction to his crew amid bombardment operations against North Korean targets.

Making the best of a serene yet tense moment between naval missions, Carrison develops a method to retrieve the birds using a custom-made trout net on a boat hook. Despite the feat resulting in no duck dinners due to the meat’s unpalatable quality, Carrison’s antics earn him the unofficial title of “Fish and Game Commissioner, Wonsan County.” This reflection on military life provides a compelling glimpse into the lighter side of warfare.
