Following the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., Vice President JD Vance’s previous warnings about Afghan refugee vetting have come back into focus. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who entered the U.S. under the Biden administration’s Operation Allies Welcome program, has prompted renewed scrutiny of immigration policies, particularly since Vance had long cautioned against the risks of unvetted refugees following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.

Vance highlighted a 2021 video where he emphasized the need for proper vetting, expressing concern that some individuals may pose a security threat. Following the shooting that resulted in the death of Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and left another service member critically injured, Vance reiterated his demand for action to reform the vetting process, stating that voters will not settle for merely words. The incident adds weight to the ongoing debate about U.S. immigration policy and national security.
