Since the company’s relocation from California to Wyoming in 2019, Weatherby has updated its line-up with the rebirth of classic models and the introduction of brand-new firearms, like the M700-compatible Model 307. The company’s latest firearm is not only a new model, but it marks the company’s entry into the muzzleloading category. The Model 307 MZY promises to “deliver a new standard of accuracy, reliability, and consistency for black powder hunters,” according to Weatherby.
The Model 307 MZY is based on a modified Model 307 action with a spiral-fluted toolless takedown bolt and a TriggerTech Field adjustable trigger. It uses the Arrowhead Gen2 sealed primer module ignition system, which uses precision-fit primer modules loaded with large rifle primers rather than the standard 209 shotgun primers that most modern muzzleloaders use. A standard .308 Win. priming tool is used to insert the primers into the module.
The system is designed for simplicity, cleanliness and reliability, especially in cold weather conditions. Twenty reusable primer modules are included with each rifle, along with a breechplug wrench and socket for the removable breechplug. Primer modules are good for approximately 20 uses. All metal parts have a Black Graphite Cerakote finish.
The 26-inch #4 contour barrel is spiral-fluted and has its muzzle threaded 3/4×24 TPI and is capped with a self-timing (with the use of a timing nut) MZY side-ported muzzle brake. The ramrod is not stored under the barrel but is a collapsible unit that carries in a pouch on the belt. A Peak 44 Bastion, the lightest and strongest vertical-grip carbon fiber stock on the market, is used with the 307 MZY, and it comes with a 3DHEX recoil-reducing buttpad.
The 307 MZY is available in either .45 caliber (1:20-inch twist rate) or .50 caliber (1:24-inch twist rate) and is tuned for a specific load of Blackhorn powder matched with Hornady Bore Driver bullets. To help with loading consistency, the rifle is supplied with a Cedar Mountain Quick Loader, which is designed to be used with the muzzle brake and to ease loading in cold or low-light conditions.
The 307 MZY comes drilled and tapped for optics mounting. It is also available with factory-installed Williams Precision iron sights, with an adjustable rear aperture and globe front sight with interchangeable inserts, for those who need open sights for compliance with local hunting regulations. The rifle weighs 7.1 pounds.
