Stone Prairie Wildlife Management Area is not only a prime location for hunting but also a vital site for avian research, as highlighted by Hendrix College professor Maureen McClung. Since 2020, her team has gathered critical data on 47 bird species, capturing over 1,100 individual birds as part of the Monitoring of Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) program, which aims to shed light on bird conservation in Central Arkansas.
McClung’s research reveals significant trends, including a decrease in net captures in forested areas, while monitoring practices involve meticulous processes such as aging and sexing birds. With insights gathered from this project, researchers aim to understand the driving factors behind bird population changes, linking demographic data to larger environmental concerns.
