In 2021, Springfield Armory made a splash with its SA-35 design, a modern rendition of the famous Browning Hi-Power handgun. Recently, the company has since expanded the lineup, adding a polished blued finish version and, now, a shortened, compact variant in the SA-35 4″. American Rifleman Executive Editor Jay Grazio has paired this compact, carry-ready Hi-Power with a classically styled leather outside-the-waistband holster from Galco, along with a classic-looking pocket knife that has a bit of a modern twist. Watch our “I Carry” video above to see the details of this EDC kit.

“Yes, they have a modern day mythical Browning Hi-Power Detective available from Springfield Armory, and it’s got all of the standard Browning Hi-Power features you’d expect,” American Rifleman Executive Editor Jay Grazio said. “We have an external extractor. We have really nice wooden grips. There are single-sided controls. However, the thumb safety on this guy is oversize. It’s super easy to flick on and off.”

In terms of size and capacity, the new Springfield Armory SA-35 4″ is slightly shorter in both height and length than the Glock G19, and with Springfield’s inclusion of modern magazines, the SA-35 has a capacity of 15 rounds of 9 mm instead of the traditional 13-round capacity of the original.

“The only dimension in which it exceeds the Glock is in the weight because it’s an all-metal pistol,” Grazio said. “And while, yes, that adds about half a pound or so to its weight when you’re carrying it, it also means you’ve got a lot more heft when you’re shooting, and this is an absolute joy to shoot.”

A set of checkered walnut grips, modern Tactical Rack sights and forged components completes this carry-ready pistol, which retails for a suggested MSRP of $799.

“To complement a classic like the SA-35, we’ve gone with a Galco Combat Master outside-the-waistband leather holster, and this is just a absolute classic double stitched leather holster,” Grazio said. “It’s got belt loops that go for up to 1.5-inch belts, super solid, super secure. Tucks it into the body. Even outside the waistband, it’s easy to conceal.”

Galco’s Combat Master Belt Holster is available to fit dozens of popular handgun models and can be had in black or tan. Pricing on the SA-35 4″ model is $132.

“Rounding out today’s kit, I wanted to go with a classic with a bit of an updated twist. What we have is the Buck 110 Automatic,” Grazo said. “For folks who are fans of the Buck 110 pocket knife, it’s not what you would call quick-to-deploy. You’ve got a little thumbnail indentation on the blade that you have to use both hands to open the blade. Not so with this. It’s a push-button.”

Buck’s 110 Auto knife is constructed with a 420HC steel, clip-point blade, along with a handle design crafted from a combination of brass and Crelicam ebony wood. Suggested retail pricing on the 110 Auto is $230.
