On September 5, students from Wauwatosa East and West High Schools participated in coordinated walkouts to advocate for stricter gun control measures and to express their frustration with a newly implemented ban on cell phones. Over 100 students at Wauwatosa East demanded action against gun violence, calling for legislation to ban assault weapons while simultaneously addressing the anxiety surrounding safety in their educational environment.
During the demonstrations, students shared personal accounts of fear in their daily lives. Junior Quinn Gagliano from Wauwatosa West raised concerns that limitations on phone access could prevent students from contacting their families in an emergency, stating, “If something does happen, they’re going to take away the only resources.” The walkouts showcased a unified call for improved safety measures within schools, as students emphasize that their priority is the security of their learning environments.
