If you take a peek inside the average hunter’s gun safe, you’ll find many of the same popular cartridges: .30-06 Springfield, .308 Win., .270 Win., .243 Win., .30-30 Win., .300 Win. Mag., and a few others. You don’t need me to sing the praises of those old-school cartridges. They’ve been hammering big game for decades, and the world doesn’t need another “10 Best” list that includes the 7mm Rem. Mag.Instead, I want to point your attention to a few options off the beaten path. These cartridges aren’t obscure or obsolete like those you’ll find in the Forgotten Cartridges series. But even…
The Benelli M4 set the standard for a combat-grade semi-automatic shotgun when it was adopted by the Marine Corps as the M1014. While it proved to be a popular shotgun, civilian users in this country have had to settle for a version missing some of the features of its Marine brethren. That all changed with Benelli’s introduction of the new-for-2025 M4 EXT. With the new EXT model, Benelli is offering civilians the same features found on the law-enforcement and military versions of the M4. Black MultiCam finish shown. Imported shotguns and semi-automatic rifles must conform to the standards of 18…
00:00:05 Speaker 1: It’s mid November and the white tail rud is in full swing. You kind of just have to be there to understand. But a buck walking through timber a glow with fallen leaves is rare. It’s a fleeting moment and it impacts the hunter at a deep level. I don’t want to over romanticize it, but the experiences that we have in wild places are often significant highlights in our lives, and these stories on this episode celebrate these moments of engagement with wild places and the moments we have with our friends. A lot of these…
In recent years, Colt has revived its vaunted line of “snake guns,” a collection of double-action revolvers with serpent-inspired nomenclature, such as the Cobra, the Python and the Anaconda. One of the latest additions to the second-generation line of snake guns is the Viper, which stands out in the lineup for several reasons. Watch our “American Rifleman Television” Rifleman Review segment above to see the details and watch it in action on the range. “The original Vipers came out in 1977. They were an aluminum alloy-frame gun, and they were chambered in the .38 Special cartridge,” former American Rifleman Editor…

I’m your host, Tony Peterson, and today’s episode is all about dealing with the attrition of hunting skills when we leave the training grounds and head out into the fields and on the water with our dogs. If you haven’t yet gone through what I’m going to talk about on this show, you’re either the best dog trainer on the planet, or you have the best dog on the planet, or you’re blissfully aware of the reality when you actually hunt. All three would be great, but only one is…

00:00:01 Speaker 1: All right, welcome back to another episode of Rough Fresh. I’m Jake Koefer, and we have three Big Buck stories and updates from Kansas, Illinois, and Pennsylvania, and we’re getting deeper into the month of November. Thanksgiving is just right around the corner, and I think this is one thing for everyone to consider when the calendars, which is two December, we’re going to be wishing it was November again. So a lot of the advice and updates here throughout this episode is to remember it’s November. Remember this is the time we’ve been waiting for, and…
This article is about my experience using a shipping container as a mouse-proof cellar. A couple of important notes up front – shipping containers are not designed to have a load-bearing roof. I discovered that quickly while attempting to put a dirt cover over the top of the container. With a small load of dirt on top, the roof of the metal container began to bow. I shoveled the dirt back off of there, and revised my plan as explained below. So don’t do that. Also, it is essential that the container be installed above the groundwater table to prevent…
