If you’ve been around dog trainers long enough, you’ve no doubt heard the expression, “You have to put a good foundation on the pup!” or something along those lines.Trainers love to talk about how building a strong foundation makes future training easier. While I completely agree with the premise, I also think that the term “foundation” is ambiguous, and that’s a problem. How can we build a foundation if we don’t know what the foundation is supposed to look like?A dictionary’s definition of a foundation is something like, “the basis or groundwork of anything.” When we’re talking about a foundation…
A 32-year-old Greenfield man, Anthony J. Badali, faces serious felony charges after his arrest on June 13 for possessing child pornography and illegal firearms. His arrest followed a detailed investigation initiated by a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, leading to the execution of a search warrant at his residence where police discovered multiple images associated with child sexual exploitation and two illegal firearms. Badali is charged with promoting and possessing sexual performances by a child, as well as multiple counts of criminal possession of weapons. Authorities not only seized firearms but also found an…

Q. When it comes to lights, I’ve seen a lot more mention of “candelas” being made recently than I have in the past. What is a candela, how does it differ from a lumen and what’s the practical difference between the two from a defensive perspective? A. How light is measured and quantified is a topic that could fill volumes, involving nuances far more detailed than we have the space to delve into here. And, frankly, such in-depth information isn’t terribly important to the average armed citizen just trying to make an informed purchase of a hand-held flashlight or weapon…
There are two essential survival kits that deserve another look — both because of their importance and the confusion and misunderstandings that so often surround them. These kts are similar, but they are not the same. What sets them apart is their individuality and their applications. One size does not fit all. There’s no established list to bide by. To be successful, both bags/kits must be customized to meet each user’s individual needs. EDC stands for “every day carry.” In other words, with you all the time, always ready. The idea has been in the survival community for many years.…
The National Rifle Association of America (NRA) has reopened the NRA Public Range Fund. Established in 2009, the grant-matching program encourages city and county governments, along with state or federal agencies, to work with the NRA to build and improve public ranges across the United States. “Public ranges allow hundreds of thousands of hunters, competitive shooters, and target shooters to work on their marksmanship under safe and responsible conditions,” said Peter Churchbourne, managing director of NRA Hunting, Conservation and Ranges. “More than 100 public ranges have been awarded funds to date, and we look forward to assisting the next 100.”…
On June 24, 1374, a sudden outbreak of St. John’s Dance caused people in the streets of Aachen, Germany, to experience hallucinations and begin to jump and twitch uncontrollably until they collapsed from exhaustion. There is now conjecture that this strange outbreak was caused by rye bread contaminated with ergot fungus — a mycotoxin. — June 24th is the birthday of rifle-toting abolitionist pastor Henry Ward Beecher. (Born 1813, died March 8, 1887.) He and his adherents from his church smuggled so many Sharps rifles to Bleeding Kansas that the Sharps rifles picked up the nickname Beecher’s Bibles. The Infogalactic…
Feeling pressure from public land users and fellow Republican senators, Utah Senator Mike Lee has promised to make “changes” to his legislation that could sell over 3 million acres of public land.Writing on X Sunday evening, Lee addressed “Hunter Nation” and said, “You spoke, and I’m listening. I’ll be making changes in the coming days.”The flip-flop comes in the face of a nationwide campaign to oppose Lee’s proposal. His amendment to the budget reconciliation bill would require the sale of 2-3 million acres of federal public land and make 250 million acres eligible for sale. Public land advocates have organized…
One of the most common campfire debates regarding low-light hunting is whether digital night vision (DNV) is still king or if it’s been dethroned by modern thermal-imaging technology. On one hand, thermal imaging is better at detecting game, particularly in light brush, but on the other, nothing beats the detail offered by infrared night vision. For years, the solution was to carry both, be it across two hunters or a solo participant supplementing a rifle-mounted optic with a monocular of the other type. But since neither answer is perfect, products like the DNT ThermNight TNC225R have become popular, as they…
Back in 2020, I spent some time in Michigan with Mark Kenyon filming our Back 40 series. At one point during a mid-summer stand hanging mission, he decided to check a few trail cameras. I watched as he swapped out SD cards, and then doused each camera with scent-eliminating spray. At the time I thought he was being just a bit too neurotic. Now, I’m not so sure.As trail cameras become more and more ubiquitous across the whitetail sphere, it seems like deer are getting wise to them. This is highly situational, as all deer hunting is, but some places I…
