In Texas, a state known for its lack of public lands, the tide may be turning. Though only four percent of land in the state is publicly owned (and of that, only 1 million acres are open to hunting), those numbers are set to grow substantially in coming years. That’s thanks to a 2023 voter-approved $1 billion package, known as the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund, allowing the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) to acquire new state parks and expand existing ones, with a focus on the “golden triangle” area between Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Importantly, the money can’t be…

(Continued from Part 1.) Defense Production Act The Defense Production Act was passed in 1950. It is an important piece of legislation that we should all know about. Why? Before the bombing of Pearl Harbor part of Congress (GOP) was advocating an isolationist stance regarding the war in Europe. Since Congress controls the budget, it made providing military aid to our Allies extremely hard. The Defense Production Act aimed at making it easier for a U.S. president to prepare the U.S. for war without “permission” from Congress. One key part of the act is the ability of the president to…
On December 20, 1917, the Cheka, the Soviet Union’s first state security force, was formed. The Cheka was initially led by Felix Dzerzhinsky (pictured) after a decree by Vladimir Lenin. The Cheka was successively replaced by the OGPU, NKVD, KGB, SVR, and most recently by the FSB (Federal’naya Sluzhba Bezopasnosti or Federal Security Service) of the Russian Federation. State security agents were commonly called “Chekists” throughout the Soviet era. — December 20th, 1669: The first jury trial in Delaware. Armed Citizen® Today Just after 7 a.m. on Dec. 11, 2025, in Gulfport, Miss., two women were at home when a man whom both women had protective orders against broke in through a window. The two women fled the man, who was armed with a knife and a hammer, as he slashed at them. The women managed to barricade themselves in another room, but the assailant was not deterred. As he tried to break into that room, one of the women retrieved a firearm and shot the man dead. The 29-year-old assailant had been released from jail on bond after…
Henry Repeating Arms is well-known for its extensive line of lever-actions, ranging from classically styled .22s all the way to modern big-bore lever guns designed for field use. But in 2025, Henry decided to branch out even further, launching its Special Products Division, a research and development arm dedicated to producing firearms tailored to specific customers and use cases. For the division’s first design, it embraced the rapidly growing trend of suppressor usage, building the SPD HUSH as the perfect host for a silencer. At its heart, the Henry SPD HUSH is based on the company’s large-frame lever-action rifles, in…
Several years ago, I drew a limited hunt on public ground in my state. Part of that draw required hunters to harvest a doe before filling their buck tags. I went into that hunt assuming I’d tag a doe on the first day and have three days to find a buck. Boy, was I wrong. It wasn’t until my third day that I even saw a doe on that pressured ground. Even then, I lucked out, getting a thirty-yard shot while still-hunting through the timber. I basically dragged that 70-pound doe out by the hooves, and it felt like one of…
